The upgrade to an item lets players increase the level of equippable items like trinkets, weapons, and armor over a certain threshold. You can upgrade items at any NPC that accepts the appropriate currency.

Upgrade components are integrated into equipment to offer attributes bonuses and other effects. The majority of these upgrades are slot-restricted but some are universal.

Rerolling

There are also universal upgrades that can be slotted into any kind of equipment. These upgrades have lower benefits than those that are type-restricted, but they are much easier to obtain. Certain upgrades can be transformed into gems by a jeweler and can be used to upgrade any trinket slot. Other upgrade components are only placed in weapon accessories and offer a small amount of bonus without increasing damage.

Requirements

The ability to upgrade items is an essential aspect of increasing your character' strength and efficiency in combat. Upgrades can increase the stats of an item or add a prefix, or suffix. The amount of stats an item can improve depends on its rarity and mark level. You can find upgrades in raids and dungeons or buy them from vendors. They can also be acquired as a random drop or looted from other players.

There isn't a viable game design solution to the issue of the "not worth it" feeling that some players have about upgrading certain items. Costs

Upgrades can increase the physical strength of gear, its spell power and health (for rings and armor) or add a bonus effect when it is in your inventory. You can get upgrade components through crafting or purchase them from vendors. You can also loot or drop them from other players or receive them as reward. Upgrade components can be inserted into weapons, armor and trinkets.  item upgrader  can also be attached on gathering tools. The majority of upgrade components can be replaced with an Upgrade Extractor. The exception is glyphs, which can be salvaged using the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool.

Depending on the kind of item, upgrading an item may cost Dilithium or gold. Additionally, many upgrades require Flightstones and/or crests. The amount of Flightstones and Crests required to upgrade an item is determined by the level of the item. Blizzard also sets a maximum level for upgrades. Upgrades to the highest level can be costly particularly when upgrading PvE equipment.

Upgrades can also modify a weapon's ammunition, or damage die size. They also can alter its special weapon properties like its heavy or operative property, or hand requirement. Certain upgrades can alter the appearance of a weapon.

While increasing stats is the primary goal of upgrades to items however, you must consider the costs associated with upgrading an item before making the decision.
